The Department of Public Works offers many services to Village residents. They handle Sanitation, Recycling, and Street Lighting and also Maintain the Streets and Highways.

REFUSE & RECYCLING COLLECTIONSanitation pick-up for household garbage is two (2) times per week. Do not put garbage cans by the curb, as the Village will pick-up the garbage by the side of the house. Garbage cans must have close fitting (water tight) covers and durable handles. We do not under any circumstances pick-up construction debris or hazardous waste.
The Sanitation Schedule is as follows:
Monday - South of Main Street
Tuesday - North of Main Street
Thursday - South of Main Street
Friday - North of Main Street
Recycle cans and newspapers are to be brought out curbside on alternate Wednesdays for pick-up. Click here to check color coded 2013 calendar for pick-up dates. Also click the Recyclables List to find out what can and cannot be recycled and how it should be handled.
BULK ITEMSTwo(2) bulk items, i.e. couch/table/mattress, can be placed curbside every Tuesday night and will be picked-up sometime Wednesday after recycles is taken care of.
WHITE GOODSStoves, Dryers, Refrigerators, etc. are picked-up on Wednesday by appointment only. These items are to be placed curbside on the Tuesday night prior to the scheduled appointment. Appointments can be made by calling 475-4300 ext. 130, Monday through Friday 9:00am - 4:30pm.
YARD WASTEBagged grass will not be picked-up.
Leaves must be placed in paper or plastic bags and brought curbside on your second garbage day on alternate weeks. Check color coded 2013 Calendar for correct pick-up dates.
Loose leaves will only be picked up from October 28th through December 6th. During that time the Village will pick up bagged & unbagged leaves brought to the curb. Loose leaves should be raked to the curb or in front of the property line. Do not mix sticks, bottles, rocks, or other debris in leaf piles. Also do not block storm drains with leaf piles. Please note, during loose leave pick-up they do not follow a scheduled pick-up. A payloader starts at one end of the Village and works its way around and when it's done going around, it starts the loop all over again. There are no appointments for loose leaves.
BRANCHESBranches must be six (6) inches in diameter or less, cut into three (3) foot lengths, bundled and brought curbside. They will be picked-up on your second garbage day on alternate weeks. Checked color coded 2013 Calendar for correct pick-up dates.
Larger branches will be picked-up on Wednesday by appointment only. They must be placed curbside on the Tuesday night prior to the scheduled appointment. Appointments can be made by calling 475-4300 ext. 130, Monday through Friday 9:00am - 4:30pm.
RECYCLE CENTERRubbish and bulk items can be brought to our Recycle Center/DPW Yard, located at
216 Waverly Avenue, across for US-1 Auto Parts. The Recycle Center is open every first and third weekends of the month, except on holidays. On Saturday the hours are 8:00am to 4:00pm and on Sunday from 9:00am to 1:00pm.

*** Construction Debris, Car Parts, Hazardous Waste, Full or Empty Propane Cylinders will NOT be accepted and must be taken to the Brookhaven Town Landfill.
SNOW REMOVALResidents must remove all vehicles from streets after an accumulation of 2" or more of snow. Parked cars are an obstacle to the snow plows. In addition, plowing around parked cars leaves large amounts of snow and ice on the roadway.
Please stay back from the plow truck 200', the trucks need to backup on a regular basis.
Shovel snow from driveways onto your lawn and not into the street. This will help avoid creating dangerous slippery conditions for both motorist and pedestrians.
Place property markers on your property line as this helps the person plowing distinguish between the road and your property if there is a lot of snow.
SEWER APPLICATIONTo be connected to the sewer, the property will either be an In-District or an Out-of-District Sewer Connection. Please call, 475-4300 ext.130 to verify which form is applicable for the property you are interested in connecting and also for further information regarding anything related to the sewer. SIDEWALK OR CURB & APRON CUTTING APPLICATIONClick here for a Sidewalk or Curb & Apron Cutting application. It is required for any change of placement or new placement of driveway. You must fill out the form and attach insurance certificate. No fee is required, but approval is subject to inspection by the Highway Superintendent.
